Behind The Scenes
It’s hard work making Rum! It is close to 90 degrees most days and Dan and Matt work long hard hours. Our Marketing and Events people are working close to 7 days a week, Retail and Tour guides have full Tours and the Tasting room is packed. Our Accounting and Office Staff are doing their jobs plus helping everyone else wherever they are needed. So what do we do to get rid of the stress? Throw a Party! The “Wicked Dolphin Distillery Speakeasy, A Prohibition Party,” to be exact.
On the last day of February we threw fundraiser for the Gulf Coast Humane Society Cape Coral Shelter- what a blast. Even with the heavy rain and a few electrical hiccups, it was one heck of a party. The event time was 8pm – Midnight and if you were here at 8pm, the party was already in full swing. One of the big surprises was how many of the attendees came fully dressed in 1920’s Prohibition era clothing-flappers, spats, Zoot Suits and feathers. The citizens of Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties came to party! It was just wonderful and we were packed.
Jim Syoen, of Fox Weather fame, was our emcee and music was brought to us by a quartet featuring vocalist, Lynn Richardson. If you preferred a little casino action, there were games of all kinds. A 1 carat Diamond Drop, brought to us by John Michael Diamond and Jewelry Studio in Cape Coral, gave guests the change to drink champagne with the hopes of winning the real gem. Thirsty? We had a variety of craft cocktails as well as craft beer on draft, donated by two local breweries. Fat Point Brewing served up their Ryeght Angle IPA and Big Boca Ale while Fort Myers Brewing Company represented with their Gateway Gold. Thank you to these hard working and award winning breweries- we hope you support them. We also had 1920’s inspired dance performances by Zumba with Adriana, from the Competitive Edge Dance Studio.
We planned on having a few appetizers but our local, and very talented restaurants, went above and beyond in their donations. Chef Ben & Chef Fabrice, from Fathoms, had a beautiful spread and grilled some fabulous Prime Sliders and Pork Cheeks. Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery had wonderful Brussels, Collards and Little Pork Shanks that went very fast. Cork Soakers (yep they actually are called that – fun guys) served their famous deviled eggs, while Slates Restaurant served Chef Allen’s Salmon Dill Crostini that was gone in a matter of minutes. Stuart from Tiki Hut Bar & Grill- Dolphin Key Resort donated some huge fresh juicy shrimp – yum. Chef Jay from the Famous Bubba’s Roadhouse served a Pulled Pork Sundae, and I still have people asking me where they can get these! What would we do without Jay-delicious. Buon Appetito Café, a restaurant that I have never been to before, but will now be a regular, served up some authentic Italian Bruschetta that was delectable. To top off the fantastic foods were some equally delicious desserts : Save Room for Dessert made three different and incredible mini cupcakes-one with Wicked Dolphin Apple Pie RumShine. Fathoms prepared Fruit Skewers, Key Lime Bites, Cheesecake Bites. Noela Chocolates brought the house down with their artistic Chocolate Barrels filled with different Wicked Dolphin Rums. We still crave these and the response was so good that we now have them available in our Retail Store at the Distillery.
It truly was a magical night. A big and special ‘Thank You’ goes out to all of our Sponsors. If it were not for their generosity, this party would not have been possible, so thank you all very much! Please know you have all contributed and made it possible for the Gulf Coast Humane Society to start a Shelter that will save thousands of dogs and cats each year while helping to educate the public. Who would have thought you could party, gamble and dance all night while making a positive difference in the lives of people and animals throughout the community. If you missed “Wicked Dolphin Distillery Speakeasy, A Prohibition Party,” watch for next year’s date announcement. Who knows what we will do… I can assure you it will be different and it will be fun.
